Just 30 minutes away from the airport and 20 minutes by boat is the North Cay Nature Island, a small tropical island known for its powdery white sand and being a nesting and hatching ground for sea turtles.

As luxurious as it may seem to run an island resort or hotel, looking after the needs of an entire island is no simple feat, according to resort owner Nikki Cruz.

To supply the 1.7 hectare-island's water needs, the resort needs to source its fresh water by boat from the mainland. The island is powered, meanwhile, by generator. Moving forward, the resort will make use of more renewable and accessible sources of energy and fresh water.

How it started

Before Nikki and his family purchased North Cay Island, the previous owner already set up the resort with cottages for overnight bookings.

After buying the island, Nikki made some improvements to the rooms and added facilities. While the original plan was to just continue the operations of the previous owner, all that changed with the onset of the pandemic and tourists wanting a more private experience. That's when they were struck with the idea to have the entire island up for rent.

Accommodation

North Cay Nature Island features two villas—the Fan Villa which has three rooms good for six people, and the Aircon Villa, which has two rooms that can fit 10 people.

Activities on the island

The best activities to do on the island are snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. There's also an area called the sunset deck which offers an unobstructed view of the sunset. At night, guests can watch movies or enjoy the KTV experience with the outdoor cinema setup.

On one side of the island, guests can find giant clams or "taklobo". It's also where sea turtles lay their eggs. At the back part of the island are rock formations and a mini sandbar, perfect for taking selfies or taking romantic strolls.

Because of its pristine waters and beauty, guests have likened North Cay to the private island Amanpulo. Some people also like working remotely from the island.

Currently, North Cay has an ongoing promo where guests can book the island for as low as P5,000 per night, for a minimum of four persons. There are discounts for bigger groups.
